Nine BIG EAST women's basketball teams opened their season on Friday night, and seven came away with victories.
The biggest win of the day came in the first game of the day as Villanova opened the 2011-12 season with an impressive 75-64 win over No. 25 Michigan State in the first round of the Iona Tip-off Tournament. With the victory, Wildcat head coach Harry Perretta tallied career win No. 599.
Perretta will go for career win No. 600 on Saturday when the Wildcats take on host Iona in the championship game. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
The victory over Michigan State marks Villanova's first win over a ranked opponent since a 50-46 triumph against No. 25 DePaul on Feb. 14, 2009.
In other action around the league, Notre Dame beat Akron 81-61 in the Preseason WNIT, while DePaul beat St. Mary's 96-68 in the Maggie Dixon Classic in Chicago, Ill. Notre Dame will host Indiana State on Sunday in the second round. DePaul will play Samford on Saturday.
Seton Hall edged Florida Gulf Coast 57-51 and West Virginia beat Youngstown State 69-37. Georgetown topped Longwood 56-45 and Cincinnati downed IPFW 74-42. USF lost to Florida State 62-49 and Providence lost at Boston University 65-62.
