BIG EAST, WestwoodOne Announce Radio Deal

Dec. 19, 2013

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The BIG EAST Conference and WestwoodOne have entered into a two-year radio rights and content agreement for men’s and women’s basketball, BIG EAST Commissioner Val Ackerman and WestwoodOne Sports Executive Vice President Howard Deneroff announced today.

The agreement provides WestwoodOne with the exclusive national radio rights to select marquee BIG EAST regular season games; semifinal and championship game coverage of the 2014 and 2015 BIG EAST Conference men’s basketball tournaments; and championship game coverage of the 2014 and 2015 BIG EAST Conference women's basketball tournaments.  The 2014 men's tournament will be held March 12-15 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, and the 2014 women's tournament will be held March 8-11 at Allstate Arena in Chicago.

In addition, WestwoodOne will make its broadcasts available to the BIG EAST for live audio streaming on the Conference’s official www.bigeast.com website.

“We are very excited to partner with WestwoodOne in providing our fans across the country with additional live access to BIG EAST basketball games,” said Commissioner Ackerman.  “We know how intently BIG EAST students, alumni and fans follow the performance of our schools on the court, and WestwoodOne's national reach and streaming capabilities will make it easier than ever to connect to the action.”

Mr. Deneroff said, “The BIG EAST is synonymous with excellence.  We are thrilled to add this conference, rich in heritage and stature, to our portfolio of NCAA Basketball Games.  We look forward to working together to create new memories for BIG EAST fans nationwide.”

WestwoodOne’s coverage of BIG EAST basketball will begin with a New Year’s Eve doubleheader, featuring the first BIG EAST conference home games for Butler, which hosts Villanova at 7:15 pm ET, and Creighton, which hosts preseason BIG EAST favorite Marquette, at 9:45 pm ET.  The two primetime games are part of a New Year’s Eve marathon of five consecutive games to kick off conference play in the 10-team BIG EAST Conference.

In addition to acquiring the exclusive terrestrial radio rights to select BIG EAST games, which will also air on SiriusXM Satellite Radio, WestwoodOne will stream the broadcasts on westwoodonesports.com (http://westwoodonesports.com/player/hoops.html) and retain the non-exclusive rights to distribute the game audio to hundreds of media partners throughout the country.

Hall of Fame Georgetown Coach John Thompson, former BIG EAST Coach Steve Lappas, and former BIG EAST star Donny Marshall will be among the analysts working the WestwoodOne conference broadcasts this season.

In addition to the BIG EAST Championships, WestwoodOne Sports will broadcast 21 other basketball games during Conference Championship Week, as well as the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.  WestwoodOne Sports’ other properties include the Men’s and Women’s College World Series; NCAA Frozen Four; NCAA football; the NFL, including the Playoffs and the Super Bowl; the Masters; the Olympics; and other premier sports events.
