NEW YORK, N.Y. – BIG EAST women’s basketball teams went 2-0 on Sunday afternoon as St. John’s knocked off nationally ranked Texas A&M at the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden, while Villanova defeated Big 5 foe Temple. The two contests were decided by a combined three points as both games went down to the wire.

Aliyyah Handford of St. John’s scored a game-high 27 points against the Aggies, but no two points were bigger than her go-ahead layup with two seconds remaining. Handford had been without a bucket for over eight minutes before driving right down the middle of the lane and rolling it right over the front rim to give the Red Storm a 72-70 win over #RV/24 Texas A&M in front of the hometown crowd at the Garden.

The Wildcats earned a 59-58 victory over the Owls thanks to Taylor Holeman laying one home after receiving the bounce pass from the game’s leading scorer Caroline Coyer with just nine seconds remaining. Coyer finished with 19 points, including 14 in the second half.
