NEW YORK, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Aliyyah Handford of St. John’s and freshman guard Jessica January of DePaul were tabbed BIG EAST Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. Handford shined in the Red Storm’s victory over a nationally ranked opponent, while January led the Blue Demons to a 4-0 week.

Aliyyah Handford, So., G, St. John’s
In the Red Storm’s only game of the week, Aliyyah scored a game-high 27 points as St. John’s knocked off #RV/24 Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at the Maggie Dixon Classic at Madison Square Garden. Handford’s two biggest points came as she drove down the lane and sank the game-winning bucket with two seconds left. Handford was 11-of-18 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds as St. John’s defeated its first ranked opponent since March 2012.
BIG EAST Rookie of the Week
Jessica January, Fr., G, DePaul
January claims her first career BIG EAST citation after averaging 10.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 4-0 week for the Blue Demons. The freshman guard scored in double figures in all three of DePaul’s wins at the UNLV-hosted Duel in the Desert, where the Blue Demons won the Gray Bracket crown. She was the league’s top-scoring newcomer last week.
BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Caroline Coyer, So., G, Villanova - Scored a career-high 19 points in the Wildcats’ Big 5 win over Temple on Sunday afternoon. Coyer found teammate Taylor Holeman in the lane with nine seconds left for the game-winning bucket as VU remained undefeated (8-0) in games played away from The Pavilion.
Alexis Harris, Jr., F, Providence - Averaged a double-double in a 1-1 week with 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. Harris notched 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the Friars’ victory over URI on Saturday 21 for her fifth double-double of the season after racking up 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals against Dayton (12/18).
Arlesia Morse, Jr., G, Marquette -
Averaged 22 points per game in a 2-0 week for the Golden Eagles. She tallied a career-high 28 points in MU’s overtime win over Oral Roberts (12/18) before scoring 16 in Marquette’s win over Denver (12/20). Morse shot 52.9 percent (18-34) in the two-game span, while snagging 10 combined steals.
Sarah Nelson, Sr., F, Creighton - Named the Scarlet Division MVP at the Duel in the Desert after averaging 17.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in the three-contest span. Nelson scored a season-high 25 in the Bluejays’ eight-point win over Oregon State (12/20), as she helped Creighton to a 2-1 record in Las Vegas, Nev. Last week’s scoring average ranked second among all BIG EAST players.
Tabatha Richardson-Smith, So., G/F, Seton Hall - Scored 22 points, grabbed five rebounds and was credited with three steals in the Pirates’ 26-point victory over NJIT.
