IRISH MILESTONE

No. 16/14 Notre Dame earned the 700th win in program history (700-305, .696) on Dec. 30 with a 91-47 victory against Loyola Marymount at the State Farm Holiday Classic in Seattle, Wash.  The Irish become the 32nd NCAA Division I team to reach that 700-win milestone, following Saint Joseph's (Pa.) (the alma mater of Fighting Irish head coach Muffet McGraw), which registered its 700th victory on Wednesday.

 

 

 

STREAK CLOSES AT 90

Connecticut won 90-straight games over the course of three seasons, setting a Division I basketball record for longest consecutive win streak. The milestone ended with a 71-59 loss at No. 9/8 Stanford on Dec. 30. UConn won by an average of 33 points during its streak and won all but two games by double figures. The loss snaps Connecticut's 31-game winning streak against teams ranked in the AP Top-25. Sixteen of those 31 wins against ranked opponents were against teams ranked in the Top-10.

 

 

PERFECT WVU

No. 6/7 West Virginia posted a 62-53 win at St. Bonaventure on Dec. 30 to remain undefeated, improving to 13-0 on the season. West Virginia is one of four undefeated teams left in Division I along with Arkansas (12-0), Duke (13-0) and Florida Gulf Coast (9-0).

 

 

TOURNAMENT PLAY

With the win over Yale at the Fordham Holiday Classic on Dec. 30, Villanova won its second tournament championship this season. Marquette defeated Louisiana Tech 83-75 in the championship game of the 26th annual Sun and Fun Classic at U.S. Century Bank Arena. The Golden Eagles defeated host FIU 73-67 in the first game of the tournament. Cincinnati defeated Hofstra 65-63 in the consolation final of the Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic on Dec. 30 in San Diego, Calif. In the first round, the Bearcats lost on a last-second 3-pointer by Texas on Dec. 28. No. 17/17 St. John's reached the final of the Maryland Terrapin Classic, getting edged 66-60 by host No. 18/20 Maryland.

 

 

CONFERENCE PLAY RESUMES

The heart of BIG EAST conference play will start on Tuesday, Jan. 4 as No. 17/17 St. John's plays at Louisville, televised on CBS C at 7:00 p.m. It is the beginning of a nine-week package that will feature 12 conference games on CBS College Sports Network. No. 24/RV Syracuse opens its conference slate at No. 19/18 Georgetown at 7:00 p.m. There will be five conference games on Wednesday, Jan. 5.
