The Georgetown Hoyas women's field hockey team (0-1) opened the season on Friday, Aug. 30 at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey and Locrosse Complex against the Davidson Wildcats (1-0).
The Hoyas picked up their first loss of the 2013 season, losing to the Wildcats, 6-0.
Davidson scored its first goal 22 minutes into the game by senior Tyler McFayden, who was the second leading returning scorer from the 2012 squad when she totaled 11 points on four goals and three assists.
GU's Aliyah Graves nearly tied things up with a shot right in front of the cage, but Carolyn MacEk made a good pad save to keep DU ahead.
But then Melissa Funsten, who led all Wildcat returners last year with four goals and six assists (11 points), scored 10 minutes into the second half (25:06), which was assisted by sophomore Danielle King, bringing the score to 2-0 early in the second half.
Two minutes after her first goal of the season, Melissa Funsten assisted a goal scored by freshman Katherine English off a corner.
Tyler McFayden would knot her second unassisted goal of the game with 13 minutes left in the second half, then with nine minutes left in the game, Davidson converted a penalty stroke by junior Sara French.
The Wildcats scored their last goal, unassisted, by Becca Jones with one minute left in the game to finish things off.
Georgetown faces the Rider Broncs on Sunday, Sept. 1 (1:00 p.m. ET) at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey Complex.
