The Providence College field hockey team defeated BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 5-0, on September 20 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Hoyas fall to 0-7 overall (0-1 BIG EAST).
The Friars took a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals by sophomore Salene Shaffer (Millerstown, Pa.) and senior Sally Adua (Madison, Conn.). Shaffer connected on her goal at the right post off a feed from the middle of the circle at the 5:31 mark. Adua found the back of the cage at the left post at the 10:32 mark on a breakaway. Junior Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was credited with an assist on each of the goals.
In the second half, Bernasconi tallied her team-best ninth goal of the season just 4:23 into the action. She collected a long pass into the circle from senior Kasey Bulman (Farmingdale, N.J.) and took the goalkeeper one-on-one for the score.
The Friars tacked on their fourth and fifth goals at 59:36 and 69:17, respectively. Junior Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) tipped-in a ball at the left post, while sophomore Emily Matthews (Marshfield, Mass.) tipped in a direct shot off a corner right in front of the goalkeeper. Both assists were credited to Shaffer.
Junior goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded the second shut-out victory of her career with two saves. Rosalie Nolen made 10 saves for Georgetown.
The Friars held a 21-2 advantage in shots and a 13-2 edge in penalty corners.
Providence College returns to action against Boston College on Sunday, September 22 at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played in Newton, Mass.
