No. 14 Field Hockey Tops Villanova 6-1

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The No. 14 University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Villanova 6-1 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals improve to 13-4 on the season and 5-1 in league play, placing them in a three-way tie for first place along with No. 4 Connecticut and No. 10 Old Dominion. The Wildcats drop to 3-11 (0-6 BIG EAST).

"This was a great performance today on a surface we are not accustomed to," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We prepared well and they executed the team plan almost to perfection. I am proud of our team and program in gaining a BIG EAST tournament berth with this win. We look forward to our final home weekend to finish the season strong."

Freshman Shannon Sloss scored a pair of goals and sophomore Elisa Garcia dished out two assists while goalkeeper Sydney King had four saves to help lead the Cardinals to a 6-1 win over Villanova.

The Cards jumped to an early lead when junior Becca Maddock notched her fifth goal of the season with an assist from senior Kelsey Rosenmeier in the sixth minute of the game.

Three minutes later, freshman Shannon Sloss connected on her first goal of the game when she tipped a shot from fellow freshman Jennifer Pels to increase the lead to 2-0.

UofL struck again at the 28:01 mark when junior Mallory Mason converted a penalty stroke for her third goal of the season. Louisville took a 3-0 lead into halftime after outshooting Villanova 11-2 and holding a 10-4 advantage in corners.

The Cardinal offense continued in the second half. After earning a penalty corner just under two minutes into the frame, sophomore Victoria Stratton delivered a shot which was stopped by Villanova's Alex Diekmann. Sloss was there to pick up the rebound and notched her second goal of the game and team-leading 10th of the season.

UofL added to the lead at the 44:40 mark in the game when junior Alyssa Voelmle connected on a penalty stroke for her ninth goal of the season to make the score 5-0.

Senior Erin Schneidtmiller tallied her ninth goal of the season when she connected on another penalty corner assist from Stratton to increase the Cardinals' lead to 6-0.

Villanova got on the scoreboard at the 65:18 mark in the game with Heather Smillie delivered a shot into the cage for the 6-1 final.

In the game, Louisville outshot Villanova 20-10 and held a 21-10 advantage in penalty corners. King had four saves while Diekmann had nine stops for the Wildcats.

UofL (13-4, 5-1 BIG EAST) returns to action on Nov. 1 when the Cardinals play host to Providence at 6 p.m. in their BIG EAST regular season finale. On Sunday, Nov. 3, Louisville will honor seniors Michelle Amon, Kelsey Rosenmeier and Erin Schneidtmiller on Sunday, Nov. 3 when the Cards face Kent State at 12 p.m.

The Cardinals have clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Conference championship which will be held Nov. 8 and 10 at the University of Connecticut.
