The BIG EAST Conference released its preseason rankings and 2013 Preseason All-BIG EAST selections for field hockey on Wednesday, August 28. Providence College was selected to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll, while junior defender Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) was named a unanimous selection on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
Connecticut, who claimed the 2012 BIG EAST regular-season and tournament titles, tops the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll in 2013. The Huskies claimed seven first-place votes and accumulated 49 points. Old Dominion, who joins the BIG EAST in 2013 for field hockey only, has been picked to finish second. The Monarchs picked up one first-place vote and 41 points. Connecticut and Old Dominion are currently ranked fourth and eighth, respectively, in the 2013 Penn Monto / NFHCA Division I National Coaches’ Poll.
Louisville checks in at third place in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll with 39 points, followed by a tight preseason grouping of Providence (4th, 26 points), Rutgers (5th, 25 points) and Temple (6th, 23 points). Villanova (14 points) and Georgetown (7 points) round out the last two spots in the poll.
The BIG EAST Conference is comprised of eight teams and will play a seven-game conference schedule. The top four teams in the final regular-season standings will compete in the 2013 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship on November 8 and 10 at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn.
The league also released its 2013 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Wednesday. Marie Elena Bolles (Connecticut) was named Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Sarah Mansfield (Connecticut) and Christy Longacre (Old Dominion) share Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Tietze, the Friars’ centerback, is one of four unanimous selections on this year’s Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Tietze earned All-BIG EAST First-Team honors in 2012, in addition to NFHCA All-Northeast Region Second-Team recognition. In 18 games, she recorded 26 points on 11 goals and four assists. Allysa Voelmle (Louisville) and Longacre (Old Dominion) join Tietze on defense, while Mansfield (Connecticut) is a unanimous selection at goalkeeper.
Elena Bolles (Connecticut) and Amber Youtz (Temple) are unanimous selections on the forward line and are joined by Chloe Hunnable (Connecticut) and Rosario Villagra (Old Dominion).
Chrissy Davidson (Connecticut), Kelsey Smither (Old Dominion) and Alyssa Bull (Rutgers) round out the preseason team as members of the midfield.
Providence College opens the 2013 regular-season schedule on Friday, August 30 against 11th-ranked Northwestern. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at Noon. On Saturday, August 31, Providence will host Albany at 1:30 p.m. The Friars open BIG EAST Conference play on Friday, September 20 against Georgetown in Providence, R.I. (7:00 p.m.).
