STORRS, Conn. – The fourth-ranked University of Connecticut field hockey team has been unanimously selected to win its 13th Big East Regular Season crown in a vote by the league coaches as announced by the conference on Wednesday.  Additionally, senior forward Marie Elena Bolles has been chosen as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while senior goaltender Sarah Mansfield has been selected as a Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. 

Joining Bolles and Mansfield on the Preseason All-Big East Team are junior forward Chloe Hunnable and junior midfielder Chrissy Davidson

All 12 of UConn’s Regular Season championships have come since 1996 and the team has also taken home the championship hardware from the Big East Tournament 12 times, including the 2012 title. 

Bolles finished 2012 third on the team with 12 goals, eight assists and 32 points.  She was named Big East Offensive Player of the Year and scored one of her team-high tying six game-winning goals in the final second of the 2012 BIG EAST Championship Final to clinch the victory for the Huskies.  The Phoenixville, Pa. native also competed on the USA Field Hockey Junior World Cup and helped the Americans tie for their best finish all-time in the event.

Mansfield, a two-time First Team All-American for the Huskies, enters the 2013 season with a 54-12 record and is only four victories shy of tying Danielle Vile’s school record.  She has been named to the All-Big East First Team in each of her first three seasons in Storrs and her 1.13 goals against average in 2012 was second in the country.


 

 

Hunnable, the 2011 Big East Rookie of the Year, was honored as a Third Team All-American last season after leading the league with 41 points.  She finished second on the squad with 15 goals and tied for second with 11 assists.  The Halstead, England native has been selected to the All-Big East Team in each of the last two seasons.

Davidson tied for the team lead in 2012 with 11 assists from the midfield.  She started in all 22 of UConn’s games and dished-out at least one assist in eight different contests.

The Huskies will open the 2013 season on Saturday, August 31 when the team travels west to take on Stanford.  Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Palo Alto, Calif.
