Connecticut and Syracuse Take Season's First BIG EAST Field Hockey Weekly Honors

Week 1 Weekly Relsease

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Connecticut and Syracuse claimed the first BIG EAST field hockey weekly awards for the 2011 season. Connecticut senior Jestine Angelini was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while Syracuse senior Liz McInerney was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
Angelini scored three goals and added an assist in UConn's 7-1 season-opening win against Hofstra on Friday. She only posted three shots on the day, all of which resulted in goals. Angelini paced the Husky offense, which recorded 24 total points on seven goals and 10 assists. Connecticut will be back in action as it takes on No. 20 Stanford on Monday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
McInerney led the Syracuse defense that limited Monmouth to only three shots (one on goal) and three penalty corners in the Orange's 4-0 victory. She also provided an assist on SU's third goal of the day. Syracuse will play two ranked opponents this week, taking on No. 2 North Carolina on Friday and No. 11 Wake Forest on Saturday.
Many BIG EAST games were postponed this past weekend due to the severe weather from Hurricane Irene. Both Villanova and Providence were unable to play any scheduled games and will begin the season in the upcoming week. Louisville upset No. 13 ranked Michigan State 2-1 on Sunday at home.
