The University of Louisville field hockey team will hit the road for its 2013 season opening weekend. The Cardinals will visit seventh-ranked Virginia on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. and Richmond on Sept. 1 at 1 p.m.
"We start out with a bang, there's no question about that," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "To go on the road against two quality opponents in Virginia and Richmond is going to be tough - but it will be a good measuring stick for where we're at to start the season."
The Cardinals are led by Justine Sowry who is in her third season as Louisville's head coach. Last year the team posted a 12-8 overall record and 3-3 mark in league play, reaching the BIG EAST Conference semifinals for the eighth straight season. UofL returns 14 letterwinners and seven starters while adding nine newcomers to this year's roster.
- Louisville field hockey will be competing as an associate member of the BIG EAST Conference in the 2013 season and were picked to finish third in league's preseason coaches' poll. Junior defender Alyssa Voelmle was named to the preseason All BIG EAST team after garnering second team All-BIG EAST honors the past two years. In addition to her defensive skills, she was third on the team in scoring with 19 points, including eight goals.
- Becca Maddock is the Cardinals' leading returning scorer. The junior forward posted eight goals and four assist for 20 points last season. Voelmle followed with eight goals, three assists and 19 points while senior forward Erin Schneidtmiller rounds out the top three returning scorers with seven goals, four assists and 18 points in 2012.
- The Cardinals traveled to Bloomington, Ind., for a preseason scrimmage on Aug. 24. Sophomore Victoria Stratton
, freshman Jennifer Pels
and Voelmle contributed goals in the unofficial contest.

Scouting the Cavaliers: Virginia enters its season opener ranked No. 7 in the 2013 Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Preseason poll. The Cavaliers posted a 16-6 record (4-1 ACC) and reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2012. Virginia will be led by three-time All-American forward Elly Buckley and fellow preseason All-ACC team member, goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone.

Scouting the Spiders: Richmond will play its 2013 season opener against American University on Friday, August 30. Twenty players and eight starters return from the 2012 team which posted a 16-5 overall record in 2012 and went 7-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference en route to winning the regular season title. The Spiders will be led by All-Americans Rebecca Barry and Taylor Deitrick.

Louisville will play host to William & Mary and Ohio University in its home opening weekend. The Cards will face William & Mary in a 1 p.m. matchup on Friday, Sept. 6 and Ohio on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. at Trager Stadium. Admission is free to all home field hockey games.
