All seven field hockey teams will be in action on a weekend that features four top-20 matchups and five top-20 opponents. No. 5 Syracuse will travel to North Carolina to take on the No. 2 Tar Heels in an anticipated game against last season's national runner-up. Both teams are undefeated and neither have surrendered a goal thus far in the season.
Other top-20 matches this weekend include No. 5 Syracuse against No. 11 Wake Forest on Saturday, No. 4 Connecticut at No. 8 Penn State on Sunday and No. 16 Louisville at No. 11 Wake Forest on Sunday. Providence will also face a top-20 foe when they travel to No. 19 Boston University on Friday. BIG EAST teams will be looking to keep their perfect record against top-20 teams this season. Both Louisville and Connecticut have already defeated ranked opponents, giving the league a 2-0 record. Overall, BIG EAST field hockey teams will play 12 games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
It's another busy weekend for volleyball teams as all 15 teams are in action. Fourteen teams will participate in nonconference tournaments as Connecticut (UConn Toyota Classic), Louisville (Crowne Plaza Cardinal Classic), Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Invitational), USF (USF Volleyball Invitational) all host tournaments. Undefeated Pittsburgh (4-0) will face No. 2 Penn State at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2. Notre Dame (3-0) will look to stay unbeaten against No. 6 Stanford on Sept. 2 at 10 p.m. in Palo Alto, Calif.
There are several men's soccer teams competing in tournaments this weekend. No. 10/11 Notre Dame will compete in the 2011 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic this weekend, playing Dayton on Friday and Saint Louis on Sunday. In the WVU Nike Classic, No. 12/10 West Virginia will open its home season, hosting Binghamton and Old Dominion. Cincinnati, which received votes in the NSCAA poll, will play in the Hilton Garden Inn Invitational this weekend, playing RV/22 Virginia on Friday and Virginia Tech on Sunday.
Pittsburgh will take on Stony Brook and Valparaiso at Duquesne, while Marquette will play Western Michigan and Western Illinois in the UWM Tournament. Rutgers will matchup against Furman and Charleston in the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic in Charleston, S.C. Providence, coming off a win against Quinnipiac earlier this week, will play No. 11/13 Brown in the Ocean State Classic. The Friars will then face either Bryant or Rhode Island on Sunday.
A full weekend of women's soccer action kicks off with 12 games on Friday's schedule. No. 11/12 Marquette heads to No. 7/10 Florida State in a top-25 matchup. On Sunday, 15 teams are scheduled to play, including Villanova who is at William & Mary.
