Field Hockey Set for Friday's Home Opener

The University of Louisville field hockey team will play its 2013 home opener on Friday, Sept. 6 when William & Mary visits Trager Stadium for a 1 p.m. matchup. The Cardinals will wrap up the weekend against Ohio on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all UofL home field hockey games during the regular season.

About Louisville
The Cardinals enter their home-opening weekend with a 1-1 overall record. Louisville faced an early test to open the season with a 3-2 loss at No. 7 Virginia, but rallied to beat host Richmond 2-1 in the weekend finale.

Four players stand among the Cards scoring leaders in the early season: junior Alyssa Voelmle and freshmen Shannon Sloss, Gianna Perrone and Jennifer Pels have one goal apiece. Redshirt sophomore Sydney King carries a 2.00 goals against average and has 11 saves on the season.

Scouting the Tribe: William & Mary enters the weekend with a 2-0 record after dominating Radford 5-0 in their season opener and following that performance with a 4-2 victory over VCU.

Nine different players have chipped in one goal apiece while Pippin Saunders eads the team with five points (1G, 3A). Cate Johnson (2-0) carries a 1.79 goals against average with four saves on the season.

Scouting the Bobcats: Ohio was picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference preseason coaches poll, but enters the weekend with an 0-2 record after a tough season opening weekend on the road. Ohio fell 5-1 at No. 16 Boston and 5-2 to Delaware. Luli Gomez Teruel leads the team with two goals while Katherine Felzel has one goal on the season.

The Cardinals battled host seventh-ranked Virginia to a 1-1 score at halftime but could not overcome a two-goal deficit in the second half as the Cards fell 3-2 to the Cavaliers in their season opener. Junior Alyssa Voelmle's goal tied the game in the first half while freshman Gianna Perrone pulled the Cardinals within one in the second half. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sydney King collected seven saves in her first career start.

UofL 2 - Richmond 1
UofL used second half goals from freshmen Shannon Sloss and Jennifer Pels to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit in a 2-1 win over host Richmond. King had four saves in the win.

King Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll
Sydney King was named to the BIG EAST honor roll in the first week of the season. The Newport Beach, Calif. native made her first career start in Louisville's season opener at No. 7 Virginia on Friday. The redshirt sophomore goalkeeper collected seven saves, but the Cards came up one goal short. King was back in the cage on Sunday and posted four stops in Louisville's 2-1 win over Richmond. She totaled 11 saves and a 2.00 goals against average in the Cardinals' opening weekend.

The Cardinals will return to action next weekend when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face UC Davis in a neutral match on Sept. 13 and the ninth-ranked Wolverines on Sept. 14.

Cards Picked to Finish Third in BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll
Louisville was picked to finish third in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' poll. Defending BIG EAST tournament champion Connecticut was the unanimous favorite, receiving all seven possible first-place votes while Old Dominion was selected to finish second with 41 points - two ahead of Louisville.

The Cardinals finished the 2012 season with a 12-8 overall record. They posted a 3-3 mark in league play and reached the conference semifinals for the eighth straight season.

BIG EAST Field Hockey
Louisville, UConn and Old Dominion are associate members of the BIG EAST for field hockey in 2013. They are joined in the eight-team field hockey conference by current members Providence, Villanova and Georgetown along with additional associate members Rutgers and Temple.

BIG EAST teams will play a seven-game conference schedule. The top four teams in the regular season standings will compete in the 2013 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship which will be held Nov. 8 & 10 at the University of Connecticut.

Voelmle Earns Preseason League Honors
Junior defender Alyssa Voelmle was selected to the 11-player Preseason All-BIG EAST team in a vote by league coaches.

The two-time All-BIG EAST selection was third on the team in scoring with 19 points, including eight goals in 2012.

Looking Ahead
The Cardinals will have their work cut out for them in the face of a typically challenging schedule. The 19-game slate includes 10 home games and six teams ranked in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association top 25. This season will also mark Louisville field hockey's final season as part of the BIG EAST Conference. The league championship will take place Nov. 8 and 10 at Connecticut.
