have earned the third BIG EAST field hockey Player of the Week honors. Friar sophomore Brittany Ross was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week while Husky senior Rayell Heistand was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
Ross led the Friars to a 2-1 week with eight points on four goals. She notched a single-game career high of two goals in a 3-2 victory over UC Davis on Sept. 7., then matched the offensive effort with a pair of goals in a 4-1 win over Pacific on Sept. 11. Ross has already more than doubled her point total from the entire 2010 season, as she had only three points a year ago. Her four goals are tied for second in the league.
Heistand anchored a Husky defense that held the opposition without a goal in a 2-0 week, which included a 1-0 win over No. 16 Albany on Sept. 10 and a 2-0 victory over Drexel on Sept. 11. Heistand, the Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, was key in holding UConn's last three opponents (No. 8 Penn State, No. 16 Albany and Drexel) scoreless for the last 192:15. Connecticut has allowed only four goals all season and sports a goals against average of 0.79.
The BIG EAST will face three top-20 teams in the upcoming week, all on Sept. 18. No. 4 Connecticut will host No. 10 Boston College, No. 5 Syracuse
will welcome No. 13 Princeton and Louisville
will travel to No. 8 American. League play officially gets underway with three games on the schedule this week. Rutgers
and Syracuse will square off on Sept. 16, while Louisville and Georgetown
, and Villanova
