Syracuse Sweeps BIG EAST Field Hockey Weekly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - No. 9 Syracuse swept the BIG EAST field hockey weekly awards as announced today by the conference. Junior forward Heather Susek was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver was listed as the Defensive Player of the Week.
Susek recorded four points on two goals, including the gamewinner Saturday, Sept. 11, as the Orange defeated No. 17 Old Dominion 3-1. Less than a minute into the second half, the junior netted her first goal of the game and second for the season, giving SU a 2-1 advantage. The Orange's lead increased 10 minutes later as Susek scored her second goal of the contest. Both goals came off of rebound opportunities. Her three goals this season are tied for most on the squad with two-time all-American Lindsey Conrad.
Stiver helped Syracuse go 1-1 last week, collecting 11 saves, while only allowing three goals in two games against nationally ranked foes. She registered three saves in SU's 3-1 win over No. 17 Old Dominion. The sophomore keeper played a key role in keeping No. 3 Virginia scoreless in the second half Sunday, Sept. 12 as she recorded six of her eight saves during the game's second stanza.
Conference play opens Friday, Sept. 17 for the BIG EAST as Georgetown travels to No. 11 Louisville for a 3 p.m. start, while Villanova will host No. 4 Connecticut at 7 p.m. The Orange are back in action as well, traveling to Rutgers Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
