Pan American Cup
STORRS, Conn.- The UConn field hockey team will have two representatives playing in the 2013 Pan American Cup as former Husky great Melissa Gonzalez will play for the United States National Team and freshman Tamara de Nobriga for Trinidad. The Pan American Cup is slated to run from September 21-28 in Mendoza, Argentina.
The winner of the Pan American Cup qualifies for the 2014 Women’s World Cup in The Hauge. The top six teams will qualify for the 2017 Pan American Cup and the teams placing seventh and eighth will play in the 2015 Pan American Challenge.
Gonzalez, a two-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, has already been a member of Team USA and competed with the squad in the 2012 London Olympics. Gonzalez scored 27 goals and had 14 assists for 68 points during her career at UConn and led the Huskies to four NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the 2007 National Semifinals and the 2010 Quarterfinal. Connecticut took home the championship hardware from two BIG EAST Tournaments and won the 2007 and 2008 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. The 2010 Mideast Region Player of the Year, Gonzalez is one of only five Huskies to hear All-Mideast Region status four times.
UConn’s current freshman forward de Nobriga has played in all five of Connecticut’s 2013 contests and has started in two for the Huskies. A native of Port of Spain, Trinidad, de Nobriga was a team captain at St. Joseph’s Convent Secondary School. She helped her team win the U19 Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Board National Indoor Championship in 2009 and the Outdoor in 2009 and 2010. She played on the U21 National Team at the Junior Pan American Games in September of 2012. She was selected as the team captain and trained with the National Team for the FIH Hockey World League Round 2 in Rio de Janeiro.
