The Providence College field hockey team will host Brown University in a non-conference match on Wednesday, October 2 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Providence is led offensively by junior forward Daniella Bernasconi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), who has 22 points on 10 goals and two assists. She recently moved into 23rd place all-time at Providence in career goals (19). Bernasconi ranks ninth in nation in goals per game (1.11) and 10th in points per game (2.44). Additionally, Bernasconi ranks second in the BIG EAST Conference in both categories behind Temple’s Amber Youtz.
Sophomore Salene Shaffer is second on the team in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists. She is followed by juniors Kaleigh FitzPatrick (Dedham, Mass.) and Henni Tietze (Sankt Augustin, Germany) with four point each. FitzPatrick owns two goals, while Tietze has recorded one goal and two assists.
Junior goalkeeper Deidra Clymer (South Windsor, Conn.) has played 650 minutes in the cage for Providence and has recorded a 1.51 goals against average and a 0.770 save percentage. Providence has posted a 3-0 record this season under the lights. The Friars also have recorded three of their four victories at home on Lennon Family Field.
Last season, the Friars defeated Brown, 4-1, on October 16, 2012. Steph Guglielmo (Castle Rock, Colo.) gave Providence a 1-0 lead 1:14 into the game, and Friars never looked back. , the Friars have posted an 8-3 record vs. Brown. The Friars dropped back-to-back games to the Bears in 2002 and 2003 to start the Madl era, and have won eight of the last nine matches. The last time Brown defeated Providence was during the 2010 season. The Bears earned a 2-1 victory, which was decided in penalty strokes.
BROWN UNIVERSITY (3-4)... The Brown University field hockey team enters Wednesday’s game at Providence with a 3-4 overall record. The Bears have dropped three of their last four matches, including a 4-3 loss at Dartmouth, in their most recent game on September 28.
Meghan O’Donnell leads Brown in scoring with 14 points on six goals and two assists. Clayton Christus and Avery Burns are tied for second on the team in scoring with six points each. Christus has two goals and two assists, while Burns has one goal and a team-best four assists.
Shannon McSweeney has played 453 minutes in goal for Brown this season and owns a 3.71 goals against average and a 0.753 save percentage. She has allowed 24 goals and has recorded 73 saves. - FRIARS -
