PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Syracuse junior Kelsey Millman was named BIG EAST field hockey Offensive Player of the Week and senior Nicole Nelson was tabbed BIG EAST field hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
Millman scored five goals and added four assists for 14 points as Syracuse outscored its opponents 23-1 in two wins last weekend. Against Georgetown on Oct. 14, she broke the school record with 10 points, tied a Syracuse record with four goals in a game and added two assists en route to an 11-1 win over the Hoyas. On Oct. 16, Millman scored her fifth goal of the weekend and dished out two assists in a 12-0 victory over Vermont. Following last weekend's performances, she leads the conference in points (41), points per game (2.73), assists (13) and assists per game (0.87) and ranks second in goals (14) and goals per game (0.93) behind teammate Heather Susek. Her 10 points against Georgetown also put her atop the nation's leaders in single-game highs for points. This is Millman's second Offensive Player of the Week honor in three weeks.
Nelson led a defense that limited Georgetown and Vermont to just one goal and seven shots. The Orange gave up only two shots on goal against the Hoyas, and didn't concede a single shot on goal against the Catamounts. During SU's current 10-game winning streak, Nelson and the Syracuse defense have limited opponents to 3.2 shots per game and just seven goals, and have recorded five shutouts. Nelson has also recorded one goal for the Orange this season.
Connecticut and Syracuse have earned the first two spots in the BIG EAST Championship and will play each other Oct. 23 at noon in a regular season matchup. The winner will become the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will clinch at least a share of the regular-season crown.
