Updated BIG EAST Field Hockey Notes and Statistics
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Connecticut was victorious 2-1 in overtime over Louisville in the second semifinal of the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship semifinal on Friday at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky. The Huskies will meet Syracuse in the championship final on Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m.
In the first serious scoring opportunity of the match, Connecticut's Marie Elena Bolles broke away from the defense midway through the first half and was challenged by Louisville goalie Erin Conrad at the edge of the circle. Bolles flicked the ball over Conrad toward an empty net, but Louisville sophomore Mallory Mason made the defensive save at the last second to preserve the 0-0 score.
The Huskies held a 4-2 shot advantage and took the only penalty corner in the first half.
Bolles, the 2012 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the came back in the 12th minute to tip a penalty corner rebound into the back of the cage, but the score was called back on a stick foul, and the game remained tied 0-0.
Senior Vicky Arthur charged down the field minutes later to score unassisted. The Huskies took a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Louisville's Amber Thomas nabbed a rebound off a penalty corner to tie the game 1-1 with less than four minutes remaining.
At the end of regulation, the Huskies held an 8-6 shot and 3-2 penalty corner advantage.
Graduate student Louisa Boddy converted on a penalty corner three minutes into overtime on a stop from sophomore Chloe Hunnable to provide the winning goal for the Huskies.
Connecticut and Louisville have met in the BIG EAST Championship semifinals seven times, five years in a row since 2008. The showdown has been decided by one goal five times and the victor has won in overtime three times. Connecticut won the regular season matchup 2-1 on Oct. 6.
