PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Both Connecticut and Syracuse won their first-round games to advance to Sunday's NCAA quarterfinals. The Huskies beat Princeton 3-2 and the Orange topped Richmond 2-0. A win on Sunday would give each team a berth into the NCAA Championship Nov. 18 and 20 in Louisville, Ky.
Sophomore Anne Jeute led Connecticut with two goals as the Huskies defeated Princeton for the second time this year. The UConn defense allowed only three shots in the game while its offense concluded the afternoon with 16 shots and eight on goal. The No. 5 Huskies are hosting the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament in Storrs, Conn. and will play No. 7 Penn State at 2 p.m. on Sunday. UConn is seeking its 10th appearance in the National Semifinal and is 14-16-4 all-time against PSU.
Senior Heather Susek scored both goals for Syracuse. Richmond held a 6-3 shot advantage through the first half, but SU dictated play in the second, holding a 9-3 edge in shots and generating numerous shot opportunities. Orange goalkeeper Leann Stiver made several key stops to keep the Spiders off the board. Stiver finished with four saves in the game. No.3 Syracuse will face off against No. 4 Maryland at 2 p.m. on Sunday for a spot in the national semifinal.
