Seven of the eight BIG EAST teams have all cracked their 2014 schedules, with Villanova set to begin on Saturday against Michigan. Temple, Rutgers and #10/9 Georgetown all tasted victory on their first day of competition, with the Owls defeating Philadelphia foe Saint Joseph’s 11-7, the Scarlet Knights topping Manhattan 6-3, and the Hoyas handling Delaware 19-11.
In The Polls
Of the eight member schools, one squad is listed in both major polls while two others have received votes in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll. Announced on Monday, Georgetown leads the pack, remaining at No. 10 in the ILWCA and No. 9 in the Brine Media Poll. Connecticut and Louisville both received votes in the ILWCA Poll. The BIG EAST preseason favorite Hoyas won their season opener against Delaware on Saturday, 19-11.
Hoyas Harass Netminder
Georgetown attacked the Delaware goalie on Saturday, totaling 19 goals for its highest scoring output since March 22, 2013. In that game, the Hoyas slipped 21 shots past the Cincinnati goalie. Against Delaware, eight different GU players recorded goals, including four apiece by Corinne Etchison and Hannah Franklin.
Picking Up Where They Left Off
Louisville finished the 2013 season ranked eighth nationally with a 14.06 goals per game average through 17 games. The Cardinals are on a similar path through two games so far in 2014, averaging 14.5 goals per contest, including four per game by reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Nikki Boltja. Boltja averaged 3.7 goals per game last year.
City of Brotherly Love
Temple has opened the season with back-to-back games against fellow Philadelphia schools, registering an 11-7 win over Saint Joseph’s before being edged by LaSalle, 7-4. Last weekend’s winter weather forced the Owls to move their game against Hawks to Tuesday, forcing Temple to play games on back-to-back days. Morgan Glassford and Rachel Schwabb have tallied eight points apiece, while Jaqi Kakalecik and Rachel Hall have split time in the cage.
