NEW YORK – Rutgers kept its postseason hopes alive and ended Temple’s dreams of the BIG EAST Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Friday evening in New Brunswick, N.J., as the Scarlet Knights dispatched the Owls, 11-10. All eyes will now be on the Villanova-Connecticut tilt scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., in Storrs, Conn. The game will air live on FOX Sports 2.
With the win, Rutgers improved to 3-4 in BIG EAST contests and dropped Temple to 3-4, putting the squads currently in a two-way lock for fifth. The top four teams in the conference standings earn bids to the league tournament.
Louisville clinched the BIG EAST regular-season crown outright following its perfect 7-0 season, followed by Georgetown which is locked in at the No. 2 seed with a 5-1 mark and will conclude the regular season against Cincinnati tomorrow. Connecticut, who has clinched a spot in the tournament, is currently third in the standings but could drop to the No. 4 seed with a loss tomorrow.
The field will be determined based on the outcome of the UConn-Villanova contest. Should the Wildcats earn the upset win at UConn, VU would jump over the Huskies and snag the No. 3 seed by finishing the season in a tie for third with UConn at 4-3, but owning the head-to-head tiebreaker. If Villanova falls to Connecticut, the Wildcats would find themselves in a three-way tie with Rutgers and Temple for the final spot in the field. By virtue of goal differential, Rutgers would earn the No. 4 seed and Connecticut would be the No. 3 seed.
Temple finished the year 3-4 in league play and 6-10 overall. Louisville will enter the BIG EAST Championship with a 13-3 overall record. Marquette (1-6, 5-11) fell to the Cardinals in its conference finale but will face USC on Sunday in its regular-season conclusion.
