SYRACUSE, N.Y. - No. 2/2 Syracuse held off No. 16/15 Georgetown 7-6 in the semifinals of the 2012 BIG EAST women's lacrosse championship held at the Carrier Dome. With the win the Orange (16-2) will face Loyola (12-5) for the BIG EAST Championship on Saturday, May 5 at 1 p.m. ET on the CBS Sports Network.

It will be Syracuse's third appearance in the finals and its first since 2008. The Orange (16-2) also extended their school-record winning streak to 15 games.

"I thought our players responded well when it was a close game," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "Mistakes were made both ways, but we made the plays when we needed to. We stuck together and held on for a nice W."

The Hoyas opened the game with a 3-0 run, looking solid on the defensive end and patient on offense. Freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian tallied the first two goals, connecting on a spin move at 22:45 and hitting on a fast break from junior attacker Rosie Corcoran. The second goal was started by a caused turnover from freshman defender Megan Marinelli.

Junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel made it 3-0 with a score at 12:41, but the Orange answered to stop the run with free position goals at 8:03 and 6:36.

SU evened the score at 5:55, but once again the Hoyas took the lead as graduate student attacker Kristen Coleman fired in the free position at 2:51 to make it 4-3 which would stand at the half.

Georgetown held top-seeded Syracuse to a season-low three goals in the first half. It also marked the second time this season the Orange trailed at intermission

Syracuse opened the second half with its own 3-0 run to take its first lead of the game and go ahead by two, 6-4. Senior Sarah Holden and sophomore tandem Alyssa Murray and Katie Webster each had a score during that stretch. The Orange held on from there.

In the final minute, the Hoyas had two solid looks at the cage.  However, the Blue & Gray couldn't find the tying goal eventually losing, 7-6.

Syracuse outshot Georgetown, 20-14, and won 11-of-15 draw controls. The Hoyas picked up 11 ground balls to nine for the Orange. Sophomore Alyssa Costantino and Hoyas' goalkeeper Barb Black each recorded six saves.

"Syracuse made some plays at the end, but I said to the team after the game that I'm really proud of their effort, proud of the execution and the belief that they played with for 60 minutes and we're going to walk out of here with our heads up even though we fell a little short," said Georgetown head coach Ricky Fried.

Georgetown (9-8) will await word on a possible NCAA berth which will be announced on Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on www.ncaa.com. The Hoyas have played nine ranked opponents this season and have secured top-10 wins over then-No. 2/2 North Carolina and at then-No. 8/9 Penn.

Admission to Saturday's championship game is $4 for adults and $4 for youths (17 and under)/seniors. Admission is free for students with ID from BIG EAST schools and for toddlers/infants (5 and under). Parking will be available in the Dome West lots for $5.

Syracuse and Loyola met last Friday, April 27, in a regular-season tilt played here in upstate New York. The Orange won narrowly, 13-12. However due to a previously scheduled event in the Carrier Dome, the game was played outdoors on grass in the SU Soccer Stadium. Saturday's title game will be played on FieldTurf at the Carrier Dome.
