In the first round of the NCAA women's lacrosse championship held on Friday, May 10, Loyola posted an 18-7 win over High Point in Chapel Hill, N.C. With the win the Greyhounds (11-8) advance to the second round and will play at the tournament's No. 3 seed North Carolina on Sunday, May 12 at 1 p.m. ET.


Georgetown and Syracuse also will be in action on Sunday. The Orange (16-3) are the tournament's No. 4 seed and will host Dartmouth at 1:30 p.m. ET. Last year Syracuse crushed Dartmouth 15-5 in the first round of the 2012 tournament in the Carrier Dome.


Georgetown (13-5) is the tournament's No. 6 seed and will host Virginia at 1 p.m. ET. The Cavaliers own a 7-3 advantage in the series but GU has won three of the last four meetings. The last matchup took place in 2008.


In other first round action on Friday evening, Notre Dame lost to Stanford 8-7 in Evanston, Ill. The Irish led 7-6 with 5:07 left in regulation before the Cardinal rallied for the win. The Irish close out the year with a 12-5 record.


Connecticut, making its first appearance in the NCAA Championship, lost to Massachusetts 14-10 in a first round matchup held in University Park, Pa. The Huskies (13-5) close out their best season in school history and were a perfect 7-0 at home. Junior Lauren Kahn was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, while bench boss Katie Woods was the BIG EAST Coach of the Year.
