Red Storm Women's Soccer Earns 4-0 Victory Over St. Joseph's In Tuesday's Preseason Scrimmage

QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team began preseason play with a 4-0 victory over St. Joseph's on Tuesday evening. The Red Storm and Hawks played three 35-minute periods in the exhibition action at Belson Stadium.

St. John's four goals were scored by preseason All-BIG EAST selection senior forward Amy Marron, senior outside back Sandra Osborn, junior midfielder/forward Deanna Murino and sophomore midfielder Shelby Halász.

Marron scored first, slotting the ball in from 12 yards out. Rookie defender Rachel Daly and senior midfielder Jen Gibbons assisted on the goal, as Daly passed to Gibbons who squared it off to Marron.

Osborn made it 2-0 in the first 35-minute period in a goal assisted by rookie midfielder Lara Kristin Pedersen. Osborn's goal was also a close one as she netted the ball from 15 yards out.

Murino scored in the second period with a direct free kick from 25 yards. Halász added the fourth goal in the third stanza, netting the ball on a half-volley from the edge off a corner kick.

The rookie goalkeepers got their first action on the college pitch as Diana Poulin, a local product from Hauppauge, N.Y., played the first 94 minutes and Kelly Crevani from nearby Rockleigh, N.J., playing the final 11. Poulin and Crevani successfully maintained St. John's first shutout.

 

 

St. John's will complete preseason action with its second exhibition on Sunday, Aug. 18 against Monmouth (N.J.). The Red Storm and Hawks will kick off at 6 p.m. at Belson Stadium.

The St. John's women's soccer season will officially kick off on Friday, Aug. 23 at home vs. Delaware. The Red Storm will face the Blue Hens at 7 p.m. under the lights of Belson Stadium.
