MADISON- After a week of tough preseason training, the Marquette women's soccer team traveled to Wisconsin to take on the Badgers in an exhibition at McClimon Complex on Thursday evening. The Golden Eagles challenged UW, but fell short in the contest, 5-1.
Junior Mady Vicker scored the lone goal for MU, which came unassisted at the 28:43 mark in the first half.
The Badgers struck quick as Cara Walls found the back of the net at 5:47 to get on the board first. From there, UW scored two additional unanswered goals in the first half. After Vicker scored, the Badgers continued to attack with another goal at the 31:33 mark to take a 4-1 lead into the half.
UW scored the only goal in the second half in the 65th minute on a header off of a corner kick.
Marquette took five shots in the game, as senior Taylor Madigan took two and Vicker took one. Freshmen Ashley Handwork and Liz Bartels also too one shot each in their first action wearing an MU uniform. The Golden Eagles tallied two shots on goal, while the Badgers recorded seven. UW also owned the edge in corner kicks with eights, while MU took four.
In goal, sophomore Amanda Engel and junior Sofie Schunk split time in front of the net and each tallied one save.
MU spread out the playing opportunities amongst the squad as 21Golden Eagles saw action on Thursday evening.
The Golden Eagles will return to training camp and spend Friday morning hard at work before heading to Valley Fields for the annual Fan Fest. Admission is free and there will be free food provided by Qdoba. The women's team will play an inter-squad scrimmage, there will be interactive soccer stations and autograph signings from both the women's and men's squad.
