MILWAUKEE-- The No. 25 Marquette women's soccer team defeated the Saint Mary's College of California Gaels 3-0 Friday night at Valley Fields in the first annual Marquette Invitational.
The Golden Eagles (3-2) opened the scoring in the twenty-sixth minute when senior Cara Jacobson scored off an assist from Haley Fritzen.
39 seconds later the Golden Eagles struck again when Junior Mary Luba capitalized on a shot rebounded off the crossbar of the goal.
Marquette held an advantage on corner kicks with 10 compared to St. Mary's one.
Senior Taylor Madigan notched a goal at the 31:59 mark of the game off an assist from junior Mady Vicker. Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the second stanza.
Saint Mary's (1-5) received a strong contribution from freshman goalkeeper Kaeli Schmidt, who was active with nine saves.
Amanda Engel recorded a clean sheet, registering five saves.
