CHICAGO – Ashleigh Goddard had the game riding on her right foot on Sunday at Wish Field with nothing but an open net in front of her.

Goddard calmly fired in the golden goal in the 109th minute to cap off DePaul’s topsy-turvy 3-2 victory over talented Colgate in double overtime.

The victory extended the Blue Demons’ unbeaten streak to six matches and improved their record to 5-1-1.

“Kylie Nordness made a fantastic dribble down the middle and I was screaming for the ball,” Goddard said. “MaryKate Cicinelli made a great run to get behind the defense. Kylie slipped the ball to MK, and then it came to me.

“I looked up and saw the open net. I told myself: ‘Don’t kick it over the net. Keep it low and roll it in.’”

DePaul got on a roll early in this one when freshman Gini Yost scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 11th minute.

Celebrating her first career start, Yost drilled a shot from 25 yards out on the right wing past Colgate goalkeeper Brenna Mason.

In the 53rd minute, Chelsea Roche headed in a corner kick from Emily Manoogian to deadlock the match at 1-1.

Momentum swung back towards the Blue Demons in the 74th minute when Elise Wyatt scored a team-leading fifth goal into the far post from 20 yards after an assist from Goddard.

As DePaul was closing in on the win, a foul was called against the Blue Demons in the penalty box. In the 84th minute, Sidney Parodie converted the penalty kick for a 2-2 tie.

“It’s always exciting to score in overtime,” said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. “I was happy for Ash. She had some chances before that last goal, and she is so capable of scoring for us.

“We have some fast forwards. Kylie and MaryKate did a nice job of setting up the winning goal. Colgate (4-3-0) is a very good team that has been to the NCAA tournament a number of times. They did a really good job of keeping the ball. We took advantage of our counters.”

The Blue Demon defense was solid in limiting Colgate’s offensive opportunities.

“Both of Colgate’s goals came off set pieces,” Chastain said. “Our defense did a good job limiting Colgate’s run-of-play chances. “This was a big win for us and will help to build our confidence.”

Goddard spoke about how special it was to win on Alumni Day.

"It feels amazing to win in double overtime, but especially on Alumni Day," Goddard said. "Our pre-game motivational video is usually highlights of our season. But today, it was highlights of our alumni.

"We have so much respect for them because they are the ones who built the program."

The Blue Demons return to the pitch on Thursday with a road match against SMU in Dallas.
