The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team exploded for three goals to defeat Providence, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Providence, R.I. Natalie Smith posted her second-straight shutout for the Bearcats to improve their winning streak to three games.

The pieces are starting to come together for the Bearcats (4-6-0) as it utilized a trio of goals and a stellar performance in goal from Smith to defeat Providence, 3-0.

The match was scoreless for the majority of the first half, but that all changed when sophomore transfer Danielle Rotheram entered in the 20th minute.

After playing for just over 10 minutes, Rotheram generated a scoring opportunity in the 33rd minute, but her shot was saved and pushed out of play by PC’s goaltender Kristyn Shea, which granted UC a corner kick. Freshman Taylor Nelson arched in a corner that landed at the feet of Rotheram. The forward quickly volleyed the ball passed Shea to put Cincinnati up 1-0 and record her first score of the season.

Despite being outshot 6-4 in the first half, Smith garnered four saves to hold the Friars’ scoreless and keep the Bearcats’ one-goal lead safe after the first 45 minutes.

It didn’t take long into the second half for Cincinnati to extend its lead to two goals as senior Emily Elsbrock netted a goal off a Rotheram cross in the 52nd minute.

Elsbrock later tallied an assist in the 87th minute as sophomore Laura Rose put UC up 3-0 with her first goal of the season.

Smith recorded six total saves on the day to garner her second-straight shutout. She now improves to 3-3-0 on the year.

The Bearcats carry their three-game winning streak home to Gettler Stadium next weekend as they open up American Athletic Conference play. UC opens up league play with Rutgers on Friday night and then hosts Memphis on Sunday.
