The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team battled Rutgers until the end of Friday night’s match but were edged, 1-0, by the Scarlet Knights in the American Athletic Conference opener. Despite receiving a career-high eight saves from Natalie Smith, the Bearcats drop to 4-7-0 on the year.

Rutgers (8-1-1, 1-0-0 AAC) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half as Jonelle Filigno punched in the go-ahead goal. Bearcats’ goalkeeper Natalie Smith saved the Scarlet Knights’ initial shot from Stefanie Scholz, but Filigno was watching at the far post to give RU the lead in the 43rd minute.

The Bearcats (4-7-0, 0-1-0 AAC) didn’t dwell on the goal late in the half as they played down the field and received a free kick at the edge of the 18-yard box with 10 seconds remaining. Freshman Katie Couperus took the kick with the final seconds ticking off the clock, but her shot inched over the crossbar.

With being in a one-goal deficit, Cincinnati came out strong in the second half seeking for an equalizer.

Just three minutes into the second period, UC drew a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Christi Howard took the kick and serviced a ball to the far post. Freshman Bailey Wilson rose over the crowd of players to get her head on the ball, but her header faded wide right of the goal.

Wilson led Cincinnati with three shots in the match while Couperus tallied two.

The Bearcats had another chance in the 62nd minute as an Emily Elsbrock throw-in was flicked backwords by Wilson and landed at the feet of Katie Greer. The senior ripped the ball off of one hop, but the shot soared over the crossbar.

Following the third of four corners by UC, the Scarlet Knights countered and put pressure on the Bearcats’ transition defense.

Scholz found Cincinnati scrambling and launched a ball to the near post, which ricocheted off the crossbar. Filigno was there for the rebound, but Smith made an acrobatic save to keep the RU lead to just one goal.

Smith, who is the reigning AAC Goalkeeper of the Week, had a career day in net for UC as she recorded a career-high eight saves.

In the 69th minute, the Bearcats sniffing at the goal again a Laura Rose made a shifty move in the box to beat her defender, but Rutgers’ goalkeeper came sliding out to snatch the ball before Rose could get a shot off.

Cincinnati had a late surge in the final three minutes, but Rutgers’ defense held tight to grab the 1-0 road win.

The Bearcats return to action on Sunday afternoon versus Memphis. The match is slated to kickoff at 1 p.m.
