Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight at SMU on Thursday Evening

LOUISVILLE, KY. -- Senior Charlyn Corral scored two goals and Christine Exeter dished out two assists as Cardinals defeated SMU 4-2 Thursday evening at Westcott Field in Dallas. The Cardinals improve to 3-0-0 in conference play and 7-3-1 overall while SMU falls to 1-2-0 in conference play and 6-5-0 overall.

SMU got on the board early when Courtney Smith scored on a free kick in the fifth minute of play. The Cardinals responded when senior Erin Yenney blasted a shot from 22 yards out in the eighth minute to knot the score at 1-1. Four minutes later Casey Whitfield sent a cross to Corral who buried the shot in the net to put the Cards up 2-1 in the 12th minute of play.

In the 35th minute of play, Exeter sent a cross into senior Katie Walz who fired a shot into the upper 90 for a 3-1 Louisville lead. Both teams finished the first half with four shots while the Cardinals held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.

In the 55th minute, Caroline Kimble played a ball to Exeter on the flank. She sent the ball inside the box to Corral who sent the ball to the top right corner for a 4-1 lead. Louisville controlled possession for most of the half. The Mustangs had a chance in the 69th minute but Cardinal keeper Paige Brown made the save. Smith had another free kick in the 80th and was able to send the ball past Brown, cutting the lead to 4-2.

SMU finished the match with a 10-9 shot advantage. The Cardinals held a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Cardinal keeper Paige Brown finished with two saves while SMU keeper Lauryn Bodden finished with two saves.

Louisville will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6 as they travel to Houston for a 2:00 p.m. match.
