The Providence College women's soccer team was edged by conference foe Butler, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 12 in a night cap hosted at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis, Ind. The Friars move to 4-7-3 (1-4-0 BIG EAST) while Butler moves to 9-7-2 (2-3-0 BIG EAST).
Butler took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute with a goal from Mary Allen. A cross serviced from the right side was finished by Allen to give the Bulldogs the advantage headed into the second half.
Providence evened the game at 1-1 with a goal from sophomore Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) in the 61st minute. Zimmerman earned a breakaway and beat Butler's keeper to the left side. It marked Zimmerman's fourth goal of the season. She ranks second on the team in scoring with 10 points on four goals and two assists. With the game even at 1-1, the tilt was sent into overtime.
Butler notched the game-winner in the 92nd minute. Sophia Maccagnone finished a strike to lower right side to propel the Bulldogs to victory.
Junior keeper Jessica Goudreault (Sherborn, Mass.) played all 91:07 minutes in goal and recorded five saves.
Providence returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 17 when the Friars will host Xavier in an afternoon match-up on the turf field located at the Ray Treacy Track. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
