Charlyn Corral Scores late Goal to Lift Cards 3-2 Over UConn

Charlyn Corral scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to lift Louisville to a 3-2 win over Connecticut on Sunday afternoon at Marrone Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 7-1-0 in American Athletic Conference play and 11-4-1 overall. The loss drops Connecticut to 10-7-0 on the season and 4-3-0 in conference play.

The Cardinals got on the board first in the 18th minute when senior Erin Yenney sent a long shot 30 yards out over the fingertips of UConn's keeper Emily Armstrong for a 1-0 lead. Midway through the frame Louisville looked to increase their lead when Christine Exeter received a ball in close to net and fired a quick shot that Armstrong was able to block for and it was cleared at the goal line.

With five minutes left in the first period, UConn scored the equalizer. Rachel Hill controlled the ball just outside the right portion of the box and played the ball to Stephanie Ribeiro who one-timed a hard shot that flew just under the crossbar to make it 1-1.

In the second half, Hill was able to find Ribeiro again, this time in the middle of the box and Ribeiro buried the pass for her second of the game to put the Huskies on top, 2-1 in the 54th minute. The Cardinals responded five minutes later. Corral slipped a through ball to Christine Exeter as she snuck behind the UConn defense. Exeter placed a hard, low shot around Armstrong to the right side of the cage to even the score at 2-2.

With 6:20 left to play in the match, Corral found the back of the net with 6:20 to play on an unassisted effort at the top of the box, evading two Connecticut defenders and firing a low shot that bounced off the inside of the left goalpost and into the net. The Huskies sought desperately to tie the game in the waning minutes but were unable the Cardinal defense held tough and held them without a shot in the final minutes.

UConn and Louisville both finished with15 shots and 3 corner kicks. Cardinal keeper Paige Brown finished with a career-high eight saves. Armstrong finished the day with seven saves.

Louisville will wrap up the regular season at Cincinnati on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7:00 p.m.
