The Providence College women's soccer team hosted St. John's in its last BIG EAST home game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 20 at the turf field located at Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I. Prior to the star of the game the senior members of the women's soccer program were honored for their accomplishments. The Friars fell to the Red Storm an overtime battle, 3-2. The Friars move to 5-8-3 (2-5-0 BIG EAST) while St. John's moves to 8-4-3.
Providence took an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute with a goal from sophomore Lauren Elia (Erie, Pa.). The play started on a drive up the left side by junior Lia Bellizzi (Rye, N.Y.). Bellizzi dribbled through the box and placed her strike on frame. Her shot deflected off of the cross bar and was finished by Elia to mark her third goal of the season. The remainder of the half was scoreless and the Friars carried a 1-0 lead into the second half.
Half-time marked the celebration of the 1993 Women's Soccer BIG EAST Championship Team. Members of the 1993 team reunited for the 20th anniversary celebration.
St. John's evened the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick taken by Rachel Daly in the 69th minute.
The Friars took a 2-1 advantage in the 77th minute. Senior Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) serviced a cross from the right side goal line. Sophomore Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) volleyed Webster's feed in for her sixth goal of the season. She currently tops the Friar's score sheet with 14 points on six goals and two assists. St. John's answered in the 89th minute when Rachel Daly found the back of the net. Regulation ended in a 2-2 tie and the afternoon cap was sent to overtime.
St. John's secured the 3-2 win with a goal in the 98th minute. Morgan Tinari buried a deflection to end the game.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 27th when the Friars travel to Milwaukee, Wis. for an afternoon tilt with Marquette. The game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
