The University of Cincinnati women’s soccer team netted four goals on Friday night, but Louisville escaped Gettler Stadium on Friday night with a 5-4 overtime win. Freshman Katy Couperus headed the Bearcats’ offense with two goals on the night.

UC came out firing right away as Couperus gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute off a free kick. A Cincinnati player was pulled down just outside the 18-yard box, so Couperus took the free kick and sliced it inside the near post.

But the Bearcats’ lead didn’t last long as Louisville answered in the 6th minute off a corner kick. Charlyn Corral serviced a low ball to the near post, and Devyn Ciotti kneed the ball over UC’s goalkeeper Natalie Smith and into the far corner for her first goal of the season.

Louisville’s equalizer didn’t faze Cincinnati as Jae Atkinson put the Bearcats back on top in the 13th minute as she bent in a corner kick. The goal was Atkinson’s fourth of the year and third that was scored right off a corner kick.

Unfortunately, the Cardinals were able to knot the game up quickly again with a goal in the 14th minute.

After a wild first 15 minutes, play began to slow down, but Cincinnati was able to net a go-ahead goal before halftime.

Couperus dribbled a ball deep into the Louisville end and was able to take a shot from the left side of the six-yard box. The forward’s shot was saved by the Cardinal’s goalkeeper Paige Brown, but senior Emily Elsbrock was waiting on the backside for the rebound and punched in an easy goal. Couperus was given an assist on the goal.

At the intermission, UC had a 12-5 shots advantage along with taking five corners to Louisville’s one.

The second half started much like the first as Couperus found the back of the net again within the first 10 minutes of play.

The Fort Collins, Colo, native struck home her sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute to put the Bearcats up 4-2. Atkinson and Megan Cravenor were credited with the assists.

With Couperus’ two goals and an assist, she is now the first player since Jasmine Rhoades to tally five points in a single match. Rhoades did so Sept. 9, 2011 versus the College of Charleston.

But the Cardinals remained resilient as they netted a pair of goals before the 60th minute to even the match at 4-4.

With momentum on their side, Louisville continued to control play for the remainder of the second half, but UC’s backline held strong and forced overtime.

In the 94th minute, the Bearcats were unluckily called for a handball in their own box, and Louisville was given a penalty kick.

Erin Yenney stepped up for the Cardinals and blasted the penalty kick into the top right corner of the goal and out of the reach of Smith.

Smith is given the loss and drops to 7-5-1 on the year. The redshirt freshman tallied seven saves on the night, including a pair of crucial saves late in the second half to force overtime.

Friday’s game marks the end of the regular season for the Bearcats. They now await outcomes from Sunday’s AAC matches, which will decide UC’s AAC Tournament seed and opponent.
