Milwaukee - The Marquette Golden Eagles women's soccer team clinched the BIG EAST regular season title on Saturday after defeating Providence 6-0.
Five different players scored as the Marquette squad dominated the Friars on the offensive and defensive spectrum. Throughout the entire match, MU prevented Providence from taking a single shot on goal.
The first goal of the game came after the Golden Eagles went ahead in the 13th minute when senior Cara Jacobson combined with fellow senior Taylor Madigan to pass it off to junior Mady Vicker who placed it in the back of the net past Providence's Jessic Goudreault. Vicker's goal is her sixth of the season.
MU's offense was working hard during the first half, taking 15 total shots with six on goal. Cara Jacobson contributed four of the 15 shots with two on goal.
Junior Alex Heffron dished her first assist of the season to freshman Ashley Handwork who scored the second goal of game for the Golden Eagles. She placed it in the bottom left corner of the net past two defenders in the 41st minute of the first half.
The Golden Eagles' dominant defense kept the Friars from taking a shot on goal all match, earning the squad's ninth shutout of the season. Providence had ample opportunities when it came to corner kicks, having a 4-3 advantage over Marquette, but was unable to deliver.
Meagan Kelly carried the team's second half surge, scoring two goals right off the bat. The first came after the Friars fouled Marquette inside the box, setting up a penalty kick where Kelly found the bottom right side the net to put the team up 3-0. Eight minutes later, the senior forward returned to score her seventh goal of the season after beating Providence's goal keeper at the near post, trickling the ball in for a 4-0 lead.
In the 76th
minute, Junior Alex Heffron
earned her second goal of the season off a corner kick when she launched the ball towards the net, hitting the post and scoring unassisted for a 5-0 lead.
Marquette finished off the match in style, scoring a goal in the final two seconds after Anne Marie Lynch assisted Shalese Miller from the left side of the box for a final score of 6-0. Lynch tabbed her first of assist of the season and Miller scored her second goal of the season.
With this victory, the squad clinched the BIG EAST Conference title and remain undefeated at 8-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Golden Eagles return to the Valley next Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for their final BIG EAST regular season match up against the Butler Bulldogs and the chance to go undefeated in conference.
