The Marquette women's soccer team will open its spring season with the Annual Tournament of Friends and play eight additional matches in the spring of 2013, head coach Markus Roeders has announced. The Golden Eagles begin spring play on March 3 and will also include a date against the Chicago RedStars of the National Women's Soccer League.
"For our team the spring is all about learning and improving both individually and as a squad," Roeders said. "We are putting the foundation in place for the fall season and this schedule definitely reflects our objective to challenge ourselves versus different competition. The `Tournament of Friends' allows us to bridge the gap between the work we have put in since January and moving outdoors in March. The highlight is the return of our alumni; with this being the 20th anniversary of Marquette women's soccer, it is a true family affair with older and younger alumni returning."
For the Tournament of Friends, the Golden Eagles are split into two teams, Blue and Gold, and will play against MU alumni, UW-Whitewater and Concordia University. It will begin at 9 a.m. and run throughout the day. Each game is 25 minutes with a running clock.
On Sunday, March 24, the Golden Eagles will welcome the Chicago RedStars of the National Women's Soccer League and will feature high level competition along with high profile players.
Marquette will host the U16 Ontario Canadian National team on April 3 at Valley Fields before playing the portion of its schedule which includes doubleheaders.
The Golden Eagles host Loyola Chicago and Cardinal Stritch on Sunday, April 7 before traveling to their lone road trip of the spring campaign. MU will play at Iowa and against Western Illinois in Iowa City on Sat. April 13.
MU will conclude the spring season on Sat. April 27 hosting Big Ten squads, Wisconsin and Northwestern.
