Georgetown, Marquette in NSCAA Preseason Top 25

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced its preseason top 25 polls on Wednesday with Georgetown and Marquette represented on both the men’s and women’s lists.

The Hoyas led the way with their No. 9 ranking in the men’s poll, while listing 20th in the women’s. MU came in at No. 12 in the men’s and 15th in the women’s. Additionally, Creighton and St. John’s both received votes in the men’s preseason poll.

All six teams which received national attention on Wednesday are coming off NCAA Tournament seasons in 2013, including BIG EAST Tournament champions Marquette. The Golden Eagles claimed both the men’s and women’s titles in the first season of the restructured BIG EAST. MU won the regular-season title outright in women’s soccer as well, while splitting the men’s regular-season crown with Georgetown.

The Georgetown men finished 14-5-2 in 2013, advancing to the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Marquette men finished 13-6-2, advancing to the Round of 16 in the NCAAs for the first time in program history. St. John’s (11-7-2) earned a First Round win over Delaware before bowing out, while Creighton (9-9-2) was eliminated in its opening game. Providence also earned an NCAA Tournament bid in 2013.

The Marquette women went 18-4-0 in 2013, including a perfect 9-0-0 mark in BIG EAST play. The Golden Eagles suffered an NCAA Tournament First Round upset on their home field, while Georgetown (16-3-2) advanced to the Second Round before being edged 1-0 by future national semifinalist Virginia. DePaul and St. John’s also earned NCAA Championship invitations in 2013.   


 

 

Nine out of 10 BIG EAST women’s soccer teams will kick off the 2014 season on Aug. 22, while all 10 league schools will embark on their men’s soccer seasons on Aug. 29.
