Women's Soccer Preseason Poll

Aug. 8, 2013

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team has been picked to finish eighth in the first season of the revamped BIG EAST conference as revealed by the preseason coaches' poll released on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

The Pirates started 2012 with a bang, setting the mark for the best start in program history by posting four consecutive shutout wins to begin the year. SHU ultimately finished with a 7-12 overall record and a 2-9 mark in conference, highlighted by a 2-0 victory over Villanova who has been tabbed to finish third in the league in 2013.

Seton Hall heads into the new season led by an experienced core of six seniors in Brittney Albrecht (Mahwah, N.J.), Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.), Meghan Hayes (Fredon, N.J.), Marie Klemme (Berlin, Germany), Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) and Amie Ruhe (Monrovia, Md.) that collectively has over 300 games of experience under their belt.

Clarke was the team's leading scorer as a junior (3G, 8A, 14 Pts.) while Klemme (3G, 3A, 9 Pts.) ranked third and Albrecht (1G, 6A, 8 Pts.) and Ritter (3G, 2A, 8 Pts.) tied for fourth on the squad.

The team will also receive a boost in net with the return of Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) who missed all of last season due to an injury. Pettigrew has been stellar in her three seasons on the field for The Hall and will enter the year among the top-five in program history in saves, goals-against average, shutouts and minutes played.

Defending champion Marquette has been chosen as the favorite to capture the 2013 BIG EAST women's soccer regular-season crown.

Georgetown swept the individual preseason honors with Daphne Corboz earning BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Emily Menges taking Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and Emma Newins claiming Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

The Preseason All-BIG EAST Team also was announced.

Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players.

The SHU women's soccer team began official practices today and will get their first taste of competition on Tuesday, Aug. 13 when they host Drexel in the first of two home exhibition matches on the schedule. Start-time is set for 3:00 p.m. from Owen T. Carroll Field.

The 2013 regular season will kick off on Friday, Aug. 23 when The Hall welcomes Stony Brook to South Orange. The match will be preceded by a men's soccer exhibition against TCNJ and is slated to start at 7:00 p.m.
