Providence College sophomores Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) and Lauren Elia (Erie, Pa.) were named to Collegesportsmadness.com's BIG EAST Women's Soccer 2013 Preseason All-Conference Teams which were released on Friday, August 9.
Zimmerman was one of four forwards selected to the First Team. As a freshman in 2012, Zimmerman played just 10 games and led the Friars in scoring with 15 points on seven goals and one assist. Despite missing eight games down the stretch because of injury, she was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. She saw action in two league games, Zimmerman recorded four points on two goals.
Elia was one of four forwards that were named to the Second Team. Elia appeared in 18 games for the Friars during her freshman campaign. She finished the 2012 season with eight points on four goals.
The duo combined for 23 points on 11 goals and one assist and helped the Friars to a 8-9-1 (3-7-0 BIG EAST) record.
In 2013, the BIG EAST will consist of 10 teams and play a nine-game league schedule in one division. The BIG EAST has added three new members, Butler University, Creighton University and Xavier University. The BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship will begin with the opening round at campus sites on Nov. 5. Six teams will qualify for the championship. The No. 3 seed will play the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed will play the No. 5 seed in the opening round. The top two seeds will receive byes to the semifinals. The semifinal round and championship game will be played Nov. 8 and 10 at Marquette's Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.
Providence will open the 2013 schedule on the road against the University of Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. on August 23 in Kingston, R.I. The Friars will host Dayton in their home opener on August 25 at 1:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
