QUEENS, N.Y. -
The St. John's women's soccer squad finished up preseason play on Sunday evening, earning its second-consecutive win in August exhibition action. The Red Storm defeated Monmouth, 4-1, at Belson Stadium with first-year forward Rachel Daly scoring two goals in the win.
The Red Storm and Hawks played one 45 minute period, followed by two 30-minute stanzas.
Daly scored the first goal in the first period, scoring off assists by preseason All-BIG EAST forward/midfielder Amy Marron and rookie forward Miranda Haraughty, from Glens Falls, N.Y. Haraughty passed off to Marron who received the ball with her back to the goal. Marron slotted the ball to Daly who scored from 10 yards out to the back corner of the net.
The second goal was scored in the second period, this one by senior forward Morgan Ritter. The goal was set up by a pass from rookie midfielder Lara Kristin Pedersen who battled hard on the edge against a Hawk midfielder before passing through to Ritter.
The Red Storm went into the third and final period up 2-0. Daly made it 3-0 running past the Monmouth keeper and giving it an extra boot to the far corner. Daly was assisted by senior defender Rachel Hoffman.
Monmouth answered back after Daly's second goal, scoring on the diagonal from about 20 yards out.
Red Storm sophomore midfielder Emily Cubbage gave St. John's back the three-goal lead as she finished off a pass from junior midfielder Marisa Ammaturo. Ammaturo received the ball form Haraughty on a cross.
