PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women's soccer Head Coach Jim McGirr announced today, Monday August 19, that Alyssa Naeher has been named a volunteer assistant coach for the women's soccer program. Naeher will be working primarily with the Providence goalkeepers. She will join the Friars immediately and will look to help Providence build upon its 2012 campaign.

The goalkeeper spent the 2012-13 Frauen Bundesliga season with FFC Turbine Potsdam where she posted an overall record of 16-4-1 including 10 shutouts. She helped her team earn a berth into the 2013-14 Champions League. Potsdam finished second in the Bundesliga, just four points behind the league champions, VFL Wolfsburg.

Naeher was selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2010 Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) draft by the Boston Breakers. Naeher set a franchise record in 2011 where she led the WPS with 99 saves. That year she finished with an overall record of 5-9-4 including five shutouts. In her debut season with the Breakers, Naeher started all 16 games that she played in. In addition, she led her team to the playoffs where she recorded three saves in the WPS Super Semifinal.

In addition, Naeher has acquired a variety of international playing experience as a member of the U.S. U-23, U-20, U-17 and U-16 teams. She won the 2008 U-20 FIFA Women's World cup with the U.S. U-20 Women's National team where she earned the Golden Glove after posting five wins in the tournament.

Naeher was a three-time NSCAA All-American at Penn State where she started and played in 74 games for the Nittany Lions. She finished her career with an overall record of 50-19-5, including 24 shutouts. In addition, Naeher was a Soccer Buzz First Team All-American (2007,2008), the Big Ten Tournament Defensive MVP (2008), Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year (2007), First Team All-Big Ten selection (2007, 2008) and named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team (2006).

 

 

The Friars kickoff their 2013 season on Friday, August 23 when Providence will travel to Kingston, R.I. to play Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. Providence will return home to host Dayton in its home opener on Sunday, August 25, at 1:00 p.m. on Glay Field.
