Women's Soccer Hosts Butler in Season Opener on Friday

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team will kick off the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 23 as they host Butler at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park. Both teams enter the match with perfect records in exhibition play. The Cardinals finished 2-0 with wins over Vanderbilt and Purdue while Butler finished 1-0 with a win over Ball State.

Louisville is led by head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes, who begins her 13th season with the Cardinals. The Cardinals went 10-4-4 and placed third in the National Division of the BIG EAST in 2012 and returns a strong lineup including preseason all-conference selection Charlyn Corral (a unanimous selection). Corral earned First Team All-BIG EAST and NSCAA First Team All-Northeast Region honors last season and led Louisville in scoring with 23 points. The Cardinals also return nine starters and 97 percent of its goal scoring.

Butler is coming off a 12-5-4 season that included a berth in the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. The Bulldogs return their top six scorers back from last season, including All-Mid-Atlantic Region performer Sophia Maccagnone. The 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, Maccagnone led the Bulldogs with 11 goals last fall, including six game-winning scores. Butler boasts 12 other players who saw action in 15 or more matches last fall.

The Cardinals will be hosting a free pregame clinic at 5:00 p.m. The clinic is open to children ages 5 to 13. Clinic participants can enjoy face painting, poster making, snow cones and inflatables before the game. U of L students will also be able to register to win season tickets for the 2013 Cardinal football season and a semester of free books up to $500. Students will register on Friday night and head coach Charlie Strong will draw the name of the lucky student at the Illinois game on Sunday, Aug. 25.
