The No. 14 Marquette women’s soccer team (0-1) continues its trip out west and will travel to Portland State on Sunday for a noon CT kick-off. MU fell in its season opener on Friday night at No. 15 Portland in a 1-0 decision.
The back-and-forth contest had both teams taking 11 shots and three corner kicks. In net, sophomore Amanda Engel recorded two saves.
Portland State (0-1) fell to Oregon on Friday night, 3-0, in its season opener. The defending BIG SKY conference champions will have a younger look after losing seven starters from last season. 20 players on the roster are underclassmen.
The matchup is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

MU Trio Earns Preseason Accolades: Seniors Maegan Kelly, Emily Jacobson and Taylor Madigan were all picked to the All-BIG EAST preseason squad as picked by the conference head coaches. The trio all earned all-conference recognition at the conclusion of the 2012 season.
National Recognition: Seniors Maegan Kelly and Emily Jacobson have been named to TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Preseason Top 100 list to open 2013. The duo rounded out the Top 50 spots with Kelly earning a spot at No. 20 and Jacobson at No. 45. Kelly was also named to the website’s Preseason Best XI Second Team.
Marquette is ranked in the Top 25 in the nation in the three main preseason polls. The Golden Eagles rank No. 13 in the Soccer America poll and rank No. 14 in both the NSCAA and TopDrawerSoccer.com polls. MU finished 2012 ranked No. 12 in the season-ending poll.
Kelly Watch: Senior Maegan Kelly has 29 career assists through three completed seasons at Marquette. She currently ranks second on MU’s all-time leaders list with 29 and needs just five more assists to become Marquette’s career assists leader. Regina Sekyra (1994-97) currently ranks first with 33 assists.
Marquette Debut: Three freshmen made their collegiate debuts on Friday night at Portland. Morgan Proffitt earned a starting role, while Ashley Handwork and Liz Bartels saw action later in the game. Handwork took two shots in the contest.
Soccer Madness: Seniors Emily Jacobson and Maegan Kelly continue to earn national recognition among soccer media as CollegeSportsMadness has named both as Preseason All-Americans. Jacobson was selected to the preseason second team, while Kelly earned a spot on the fourth team.
Returning Scoring: Marquette returns its top two scoring leaders from last season in seniors Maegan Kelly and Taylor Madigan. The duo combined for 51 points on 17 goals and 17 assists. Classmate Kate Reigle was MU’s fourth scoring leader in 2012 with five goals and five assists. Juniors Mary Luba and Mady Vicker each posted four goals and four assists a year ago to help the Golden Eagles.
Keeping It in the Family: Marquette has tabbed former all-conference standout player, Ashley Bares as its newest assistant coach, announced earlier this week. Bares was a two-time All-BIG EAST honoree during her career. Following her time as a Golden Eagles Bares played professionally in Iceland and earned a Golden Boot Award as the top striker. Bares will coach alongside head coach Markus Roeders and associate head coach Frank Pelaez who are entering their 18th season together,
Up Next: MU will travel to South Bend, Ind. next weekend to compete in the Notre Dame/adidas Invitational. The Golden Eagles open play against UCLA on Friday, Aug. 30 at 4:00 p.m. CT and will face Oakland on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. CT.
