Georgetown University senior women's soccer player Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was named the BIG EAST Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping to lead the Hoyas to a pair of wins during the opening weekend of play.
The Hoyas, ranked No. 18 in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and No. 14 by Soccer America, posted a 2-1 win in overtime against William & Mary in the season opener and followed that up with a 5-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday.
Menges, the BIG EAST's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, led a back-line that allowed only four shots by its opponents over the weekend and recorded its 14th shutout in the last 24 games. When William & Mary scored in the season opener on Friday, it was the first goal allowed by Georgetown at home since Cornell scored in a 6-1 GU win on Sept. 1, 2012.
An All-BIG EAST First Team selection last season, Menges was one of 31 women's soccer players selected as potential candidates for the 2013 Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy last week. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners will be announced on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at a trophy presentation at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
A three-year starter on defense, Menges helped to spearhead a Georgetown defensive unit that ranked among the stingiest in the BIG EAST and in the country. The Hoyas allowed only two goals in 10 conference games last season and ranked ninth in the country in goals-against average (0.70). Menges was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection in 2012.
Senior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Brenn scored both of the team's goals, including the game-winner in overtime, against William & Mary. She also added an assist in the win over Quinnipiac.
Brenn, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection after scoring 30 points in 2012, was a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection this year. She has scored 15 goals and has 17 career assists for 47 points.
The Hoyas play their first road game of the season on Friday, Aug. 30, visiting George Washington. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. The Blue & Gray are back home on Sunday, Sept. 1, hosting Virginia Commonwealth. Kickoff at Shaw Field is slated for 1 p.m. Live video coverage of the game will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website, www.guhoyas.com, with Tom Kolker calling all of the action.
