QUEENS, N.Y. -
After a 4-0-0 start to the 2013 season, the St. John's women's soccer team has gained regional attention with a No. 3 ranking in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Northeast regional poll released on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Storm moved up two spots from No. 5 to No. 3 after another two-win weekend.
St. John's sits closely behind No. 1 Notre Dame who is 3-1-0 and No. 2 Georgetown, who is also 4-0-0.
Additionally, senior forward and reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, Amy Marron, was selected as the BigAppleSoccer.com Player of the Week with her header hat-trick in St. John's 5-0 victory over North Dakota State University on Sunday.
It was the second-consecutive week that a Red Storm player was honored as sophomore Rachel Daly received the award last week.
Marron, a Valhalla, N.Y. native, tied St. John's single-game point record on Sunday with eight. The senior forward had her first-career hat trick, all three goals headers, while adding two assists. Marron had a foot on every single goal scored in Sunday's 5-0 victory over North Dakota Sate (Sept. 1).
The single-game point record was set in 1989 by Adriana Viola against Florida International on Sept. 21.
Marron's three goals matched her season-high from 2010 and her five assists are a new season high for the senior.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Friday as St. John's travels to New Britain, Conn., for a game against Central Connecticut State at 7 p.m. at CCSU Soccer Field.
