UConn and Louisville Men's Soccer Move Up In National Polls
Connecticut moved up to No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) weekly poll, while Louisville moved up to No. 3. The duo leads a strong contingent of four BIG EAST teams in the top-25, including No. 21 USF and No. 22 St. John's. The Cardinals are at Rutgers on Saturday, while UConn hosts Seton Hall. USF is at Villanova and St. John's welcomes Cincinnati.
Women's Soccer On ESPNU On Sunday
No. 5/7 Notre Dame hosts Rutgers on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPNU in a key National Division battle. Entering the weekend, the Fighting Irish hold an 11-1-0 record, while Rutgers sits at 8-5-0. Notre Dame is 17-1-2 all-time against the Scarlet Knights, with the lone loss coming in 2001.
ESPNU Has Coverage of No. 21 Cincinnati vs. Notre Dame Volleyball
This weekend's women's volleyball action includes No. 21 Cincinnati hosting Notre Dame live on ESPNU at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The two teams enter the weekend with 4-0 records in the BIG EAST, and the matchup on Sunday could be for first place in the conference. Notre Dame is on a 19-match regular-season conference winning streak. It is the sixth longest active winning streak in the nation. For Cincinnati, senior Stephanie Niemer was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for a conference record fourth straight time. She is ranked No. 2 in the country in points per set (6.19) and No. 4 in the country in kills per set (5.29). West Virginia ranks No. 1 in the country in digs per set, averaging 19.23.
Cross Country Has Numerous Teams Ranked High As Well
BIG EAST women's cross country has three teams ranked in the top 10 in the country. Villanova remains No. 1, as the defending National Champions won the Notre Dame Invitational in convincing fashion totaling just 34 points. The Georgetown women find themselves ranked No. 5 in the country after turning in a dominant performance of their own at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh. Hoya junior Emily Infeld was named BIG EAST cross country Athlete of the Week. Syracuse is the other women's team in the top 10 at No. 7.
On the men's side, three teams are in the top 30 in the country, including Syracuse at No. 14, Georgetown at No. 22 and Notre Dame at No. 28. DePaul junior Matthew Graham was BIG EAST male cross country Athlete of the Week after finishing first at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational, beating out his closest competition by 21 seconds.
No. 8 Louisville Leads Field Hockey Charge
Louisville jumped two spots in the national rankings this week after beating No. 5 Connecticut 3-2 in overtime on Oct. 2. This week No. 8 Louisville looks to upset another top-five team as they travel to No. 3 Princeton on Oct. 10 for a 1 p.m. game. Princeton leads the nation with a scoring average of 5.11, while the Cardinals are fifth with a 3.89 average.
