NEW YORK, N.Y. – One day after coming off the bench and recording three assists in an eight-minute span, Seton Hall freshman forward Sarah Cortes (Paramus, N.J.) has been named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Cortes, who has played in all 16 contests and made seven starts including one against #20/#10 Marquette last Thursday, did not have to wait long to see her first action against Villanova on Sunday, originally entering the game in the third minute.
Playing with a one player advantage for most of the period after VU’s Emily Damstrom was issued a red card in the 18th minute, the Pirates took a 2-0 edge into halftime.
The Wildcat defense held firm for more than 30 minutes in the second half but soon after coming back on in the 73rd minute, Cortes ignited an onslaught that ended in a 5-0 victory that stands as the Pirates’ second-largest margin of victory against a BIG EAST opponent in program history.
After re-entering, Cortes made her mark from all over the attacking third. In the 79th minute, she carried the ball down towards the end line to the right of goal, forcing the defense to converge and opening up space to slide a pass to a waiting Alexis Urbanski (Aberdeen, N.J.) who did the rest with her touch from the center of the area.
Soon after, it was again Cortes who created the fourth score of the day, this time from the left wing. Cortes maintained possession and found a wide-open Brittney Albrecht (Mahwah, N.J.) who kept her shot down and inside the left post for her first goal of the season.
In the 87th minute, it became abundantly clear that Cortes’ work rate was too much for a tiring Villanova squad to handle as she provided the service on a headed goal by junior Angie Shehaj (East Brunswick, N.J.) that once again originated from the right side.
With the three-point performance, Cortes now ranks third on the team with six points on the year. Five of those six points have come in BIG EAST play as she previously tallied the game-winning strike in a 1-0 win over Providence on September 29.
This is the first time that Cortes has been honored by the conference in her brief career but she is the fourth different Pirate to be recognized this season. Senior Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) who scored her seventh goal of the year in Sunday’s victory was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on September 30 while another freshman in Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) landed on the Weekly Honor Roll on September 23.
In net, goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) has earned Weekly Honor Roll distinction on two separate occasions.
The Seton Hall women’s soccer team now stands at 5-9-2 overall and 3-4-0 in league play but wrapped up the home portion of their schedule with a 5-2-1 record.
The Hall will return to action this Saturday, October 26 when they travel to Queens to take on St. John’s in a pivotal game in the hunt for a BIG EAST Tournament berth.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
