USF PRESS CONFERENCE
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Georgetown (15-2-3) advanced past USF (10-5-4) in the semifinals of the BIG EAST women's soccer championship held on Friday afternoon at Rentschler Field. The Hoyas tied USF 1-1 in double-overtime, but advanced to the title game on penalty kicks 5-4.
Georgetown will face Marquette (15-4-2) for the BIG EAST women's soccer championship title on Sunday at Noon, ET. Both teams are looking for their first tournament crown.
USF junior Sharla Passariello gave the Bulls an early lead with a goal at the 15th minute. The Bulls held a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime as they outshot Georgetown, 5-0 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Hoyas came out strong in the second half and controlled the tempo for the majority of the second half. In the 84th minute, BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and sophomore Daphne Corboz, tied the game as she cleaned up a rebound in front of the net. She was assisted by junior Kaitlin Brenn and senior Christina O'Tousa who had a beautiful touch on the ball to begin the play.
The end of regulation resulted in a 1-1 draw to force a sudden-victory overtime period. Georgetown recorded three shots in 10 minutes compared to one for USF but neither team could find the back of the net. The Hoyas recorded a shot on goal in the second session but once again, both teams remained scoreless and would rely on penalty kicks to decide the outcome.
Georgetown pulled away in the shootout and outscored USF 5-4 to advance and move on to its first BIG EAST Championship title game appearance.
Georgetown redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Emma Newins made three saves, while USF freshman counterpart Christiane Endler had five.
Earlier in the day, the BIG EAST also announced it was assisting an effort with the Red Cross at this weekend's Women's Soccer Championship. At halftime of both contests, administrators from the league and UConn collected donations on behalf of the American Red Cross to help families affected by Hurricane Sandy. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Connecticut Chapter of the Red Cross.
Sunday's match will mark the first meeting of the season between Marquette and Georgetown.
USF awaits word on the at-large selections of the 2012 NCAA Championship, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 5 at 4:30 p.m., ET, on www.NCAA.com.
